Program Summary

The studies concentrate on the fields of electroacoustics, room and building acoustics, noise, musical acoustics, and audio signal processing. A central subject area is technical psychoacoustics, which covers acoustical and audio technologies that are based on the understanding of human hearing mechanisms. These fields together constitute communication acoustics in which a human listener always exists at the end of the acoustic communication channel.

The objective of the major is that after graduation you will be able to apply your knowledge and skills flexibly in different tasks in the industry and the academia. You will be able to measure, understand the perceptual aspects, and design, e.g., the acoustics of a classroom or a loudspeaker. In addition, you have good skills in audio signal processing, virtual acoustics, 3D-audio technologies, and you understand what is important from the human hearing point of view.

Funding is available from the Acoustical Society of America through a program of fellowships, scholarships, prizes, grants, and student and young professional awards.

There are also funding opportunities that are offered in connection with meetings of the Society including Student Travel Grants, Best Paper Awards for Students and Young Presenters, Young Investigator Travel Grants and Dependent Care Subsidies.

The Committee on International Research and Education oversees the International Student Grants program as well as sponsorship of Specialty Symposia in Acoustics.
