The Department of Otorhinolaryngology conducts translational-minded research on aspects of hearing ranging from physiology to cognition. The research lines include: Mechanisms of the Inner Ear and Tinnitus (Pr. Pim van Dijk); Molecular Function of the Inner Ear (Dr. Sonja Pyott); Cognitive Functions and Hearing Impairment in Children and Adults, and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implants (Pr. Deniz Başkent). The research work is conducted in close collaboration with the clinical team as well as lead companies in the field of audiology. PhD students are embedded in the programme of the Research School of Behavioural Cognitive Neuroscience (BCN). PhD programmes in the Netherlands are 3 or 4 years. The Department also welcomes international students for short internships.
Funding is available from the Acoustical Society of America through a program of fellowships, scholarships, prizes, grants, and student and young professional awards.
There are also funding opportunities that are offered in connection with meetings of the Society including Student Travel Grants, Best Paper Awards for Students and Young Presenters, Young Investigator Travel Grants and Dependent Care Subsidies.
The Committee on International Research and Education oversees the International Student Grants program as well as sponsorship of Specialty Symposia in Acoustics.
