The Reid School of Music offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees which are hosted by the Acoustics and Audio Group (AAG). AGG currently consists of eight academic staff and around a dozen postgraduate students. It has members and associations across the University, with particular presence in the School of Music, School of Physics and Astronomy, and the School of Engineering.

Applicants to the BMus (Hons) in Music Technology are expected to have a strong background in both music and science/mathematics, as well as a keen interest in technology and computer programming. Students will develop core knowledge in a wide and complementary range of musical and scientific disciplines with the possibility to specialise in one or more areas of interest. The courses in Music Technology provide practical experience in bringing these varied disciplines together in a creative and technological context.

The Acoustics and Music Technology MSc is a unique degree programme, combining both technical and creative subjects. Students will gain a solid platform in the essential technical aspects of acoustics, signal processing and computer programming for audio, while at the same time have the opportunity to undertake more artistically creative study in the fields of music and sound design. It is also possible to focus more exclusively on technical subjects such as speech processing and synthesis, advanced signal processing, and other engineering-related disciplines.

Many Music PhD students benefit from multidisciplinary supervision teams involving staff from across the University. Depending on the project, supervision teams may also include private, public or third sector partners. All research degrees require students to work closely with a supervision team. We encourage students to approach staff directly to gauge their availability and suitability as a prospective supervisor.
