The physical acoustics research program at the University is one of the largest in the United States. Research includes the physical phenomena associated with acoustic waves from less than one hertz to many megahertz and the use of acoustics as a tool to investigate other phenomena. Most of the activity occurs in the state-of-the-art laboratories of the Jamie Whitten National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) on the Ole Miss campus.
In addition to the core study of physical acoustics (outdoor sound propagation, atmospheric wind noise, RUS, thermoacoustics, sonoluminescence), the center’s research groups are involved in a great variety of other acoustics fields, including animal bioacoustics, aeroacoustics, psychological acoustics, signal processing, and engineering and agricultural applications of sound.
NCPA is committed to educating students in the frontiers of the physics of acoustics. Our greatest products are future researchers, teachers, practitioners, and leaders in acoustics. NCPA scientists direct students in laboratory and field research. Although not an academic department of the University of Mississippi (UM), NCPA does employ undergraduate and graduate students as research assistants. This employment allows graduate students to fulfill research requirements for their degrees and allows undergraduates who have shown good potential to enhance their learning experience. Graduate students can pursue an emphasis in acoustics for their theses and dissertations by working within NCPA research programs. It is preferable that a student is enrolled in an academic program that is appropriate for our research such as Physics or Engineering.

Funding is available from the Acoustical Society of America through a program of fellowships, scholarships, prizes, grants, and student and young professional awards.
There are also funding opportunities that are offered in connection with meetings of the Society including Student Travel Grants, Best Paper Awards for Students and Young Presenters, Young Investigator Travel Grants and Dependent Care Subsidies.
The Committee on International Research and Education oversees the International Student Grants program as well as sponsorship of Specialty Symposia in Acoustics.
