The Department of Oceanography offers B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. training in acoustical oceanography with expertise spread across a number of faculty members in underwater propagation, ocean noise, acoustic scattering, marine mammals, and physical oceanography. Complementary expertise can be found in the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where several faculty members carry out research on underwater acoustic communications, and in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, where research on underwater autonomous vehicles is underway. Other areas of related research existing in the Department of Biology, and in the Marine Affairs school. Ocean research is a strategic area of research for the entire university.
Funding is available from the Acoustical Society of America through a program of fellowships, scholarships, prizes, grants, and student and young professional awards.
There are also funding opportunities that are offered in connection with meetings of the Society including Student Travel Grants, Best Paper Awards for Students and Young Presenters, Young Investigator Travel Grants and Dependent Care Subsidies.
The Committee on International Research and Education oversees the International Student Grants program as well as sponsorship of Specialty Symposia in Acoustics.
